Research Project:
My project aims at investigating the institution of predictive (criminal) justice, understood as the ever-increasing deployment of technological tools to assess risks related to individual penal subjects, with such assessments being used by criminal justice practitioners to make a range of decisions regarding these subjects’ futures.
The project proposes to study the current configuration of predictive justice by undertaking a qualitative socio-legal assessment of one predictive tool deployed in parole decision-making in the UK.
This assessment would comprise (i) observations of parole board proceedings and (ii) semi-structured interviews with parole decision-makers, looking to understand how the use of the tool affects actors and the imaginary related to predictive justice; however, this project is still subject to change.
